40 Rides in 40 Days - One BYKlynite's Journey to Self Love

40 Rides in 40 Days

By Nidhi Khurana

 Nidhi mini collage

At the end of 2014, I made a pledge to myself to engage in some sort of fitness challenge.  I wanted to do 21 consecutive days of exercise, to be committed and consistent to working out every day (not only as a physical challenge, but also a psychological one).   I had been inspired by friends who had found fitness homes in running, crossfit and yoga.  My friends had found exercise niches that matched their interests and personality.  I was envious of the connection, and communities, they each had with their fitness pursuits and was desperate to find one of my own.

I started thinking about what kind of exercise I could actually stick with.  I like the idea of challenges, but 21 days of doing the same thing every day felt grim.  I am easily bored, which I attribute to my restless, indecisive Gemini nature.  I also wanted to do something that required me to be accountable to myself.  All too often, I have been quick to abandon undertakings that demand checks and balances only from me.  So in addition to feeling better about my body, a major goal was to stick to something for 21 days without someone checking in one me.

I had done a few spin classes at BYKLYN in the fall and really enjoyed it.  I liked the studio, the 45-minute ride went by quickly, and it was a 4-minute walk from my apartment.  Spin felt like the right match – it was a close, quick, rigorous workout that left me feeling good.

My relationship with my body has been fraught with pejorative sentiments for most of my life, but in the past few years it escalated to something so relentless and unremitting, that at times I became frightened of how cruel my own thoughts were.  At the end of 2010, I had my own personal magnitude 8 earthquake and everything that had kept me grounded was displaced.  In that depth and despair of loss, I lost the capacity and will to be kind to myself.  At a time when I needed to be the most tender and compassionate towards myself, I did the opposite and launched into a reckless neglect of my mind, body and spirit.  Finally, at some point last year, I reached my own rock bottom and the stagnation and complacency of not taking care of me had become unbearable.  I had to do something different and I had to do it only for me.

It started as a 21-day challenge.  I was going to do 21 spin classes in 21 days at BYKLYN.  Though after 14 days, I was drunk off of the spin kool-aid.  I was completely hooked.  I really couldn’t get enough of it.  My body, mind and spirit felt great stronger, sharper, and uplifted and 21 days just didn’t seem challenging enough, so I decided to increase it to 28 and then to 40.  The number 40 is considered very powerful and significant in several spiritual traditions.  There is an energy shift that happens after you do something for 40 days straight.  According to Yogi Bhajan, the Father of Kundalini Yoga in the West, it takes 40 days to break a habit.  I want to break old habits of not prioritizing myself.

Spinning is difficult, but in a bearable, tolerable way. But it is as hard as you want it to be.  The instructors are not coming around to adjust your resistance – that determination is based on your motivation and dedication.  You push yourself as hard as you want to.  Like with all things, you get better the more consistently and persistently you do it.  After one week, I felt my legs getting stronger, after two weeks my thighs felt less flabby, and after 3 weeks my entire body felt tighter.

The instructors at BYKLYN are energetic, smart and love what they do. That’s important.  I want to be engaged and encouraged throughout the ride because it makes it fun.  And personally, I believe that exercising should be fun.  The instructors give frequent cues on posture – keeping the head up, hips back, core engaged, full circles when cycling, engaging the thighs so the knees don’t angle out, relaxing the shoulders, etc. The instructors are attentive and the studio itself is an incredibly warm, welcoming place.  Every day I look forward to going there and when I miss a day (which I make up for by doing 2 classes on another day), I feel like my day isn’t complete.  Twenty days in and I already feel my habits changing.

I started my challenge on January 27th and will end 40 days later on March 7th.  I am not weighing myself or measuring my progress based on numbers on the scale – but rather on how I feel every day.  I have more energy, my sleep has improved, I am eating regularly, my clothes fit better, and I feel really, really good.  I haven’t felt good in a long time, so I feel like I am winning.  I can’t wait to see how I feel on March 7th.  Thanks BYKLYN for making this challenge so rewarding.

Attention Runners: Why Cycling is the Best Cross Training!

In case you don't take our word for it... here's a note from the professionals at Running Competitor

"Four popular cross-training modes are cycling, swimming, elliptical exercise, and stepping. All are low- or nonimpact exercises that provide excellent aerobic workouts. That makes all of these valuable training options for runners. The elliptical trainer and the stepper in particular are good substitutes for running when running isn’t possible—when you’re injured, for example. But apart from reducing the volume of impact, working on these machines won’t add anything to your running that running itself doesn’t provide. Of the four cross-training options above, only one effectively works muscle groups that are complementary to running: cycling."

"Breathe Into It..." - The Art of Breathing on the BYK, and then some.

During any given class, it's not unusual to hear BYKlyn Master Instructor, Kat Piola cueing her riders to breathe deeply and to engage their core power, quickly followed by a "but don't hold your breath!" And this morning, during BYK-lates (Cycle + Pilates), she placed a lot of emphasis on those breathing techniques that are so key to our Pilates practice.  But let's dig a little deeper... what about breathing on the bike? or on the run? or during a bench press for that matter?  Does breathing really make a difference in our workouts?  The answer is YES.  Here's why...

(And breathe easy... there won't be a test tomorrow)
